Martha Meeks Obituary

Martha F. Meeks, age 95 of Douglas Ga. passed away on Tuesday December 29, 2020 at Coffee Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Meeks was born on September 23, 1925 in Rockmart, Ga.  the daughter of the late Albert Newton Johnson and Jenny Irene Reid Johnson.

Mrs. Meeks retired from Coffee County School System as a teacher, volunteered at the Hope Center, and was a member of Douglas First Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Pilot Club, Golden Girl at Shady Acres, Retired Teacher Association, and a GAE member.  She was well known and loved in our community. The students she taught will tell you that she was a favorite teacher and speak of how she made learning come alive. Whenever she saw an opportunity to show kindness or help someone, she seized it. She encouraged her students, kids, and grandkids to dream big. At the age of 95 she had just completed one of her own lifelong dreams to write and publish a book. Martha led a truly extraordinary life and made quite a mark on the lives of those who knew her. Her loss is deeply felt by her family but we hold onto a lifetime of memories and celebrate as she has entered into eternity with her savior.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by 4 sisters, 4 brothers, her husband, Charles Clifford Meeks and a grandson, Mathew Gibbs.

Survivors include two daughters, Jenny L. Thompson (Carroll) of Douglas, GA and Carol M. Bratcher (Ollie) of Douglas, GA; Step-son Eddie Meeks (Harriett) of Thomaston, GA; seven grandchildren Derrick Gibbs (Tabitha), Sarah Spell (John), Gabe Bratcher (Robbyn), Charlie Bratcher (Jamie), Candace Williamson (James), Tracy Vercillo (Bernard), Jonathan Meeks (Julie). Twelve great grandchildren Kadee Fussell, Matalyn Fussell, Shelby Bratcher, Max Bratcher, Aria Bratcher, Olivia Bratcher, Charlotte Bratcher, Chloe Bratcher, Audrey Williamson, Jack Williamson, Ben Berry, Jeffery Berry, Arissa Gibbs, and brother Herbert Johnson (Elizabeth) of Cedartown, Ga.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, January 14th, 2021 at 11:00am at Central Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Shep Johnson officiating. Pallbearers will be Gabe Bratcher, Charlie Bratcher, Derrick Gibbs, Sarah Spell, John Spell, Candace Williamson, and James Williamson.
