Mrs. Allowee V. Grantham

Augusta, GA. - Mrs. Allowee Vickers "Vicki" Grantham, 85, went home to be with the Lord on April 2, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 5, 2014 in the chapel of Sims Funeral Home in Douglas, Ga.
Mrs. Grantham is survived by her two sons, John Richard (Kyung) Grantham and Steven Keith (Sandy) Grantham, four grandchildren, Carolann Rose (Nicholas) Utley, John William Buckley, Jeremy Neil Larsen, Kristy Larson (Dwight) Alcala and two great-grandchildren, Miles Sampson Alcala and Keaton Davis Alcala. She was preceded in death by her parents Nellie Purvis Vickers and Michel "Mitch" Vickers, her daughter Glynda Ann Grantham, sisters Gussy Vickers and Omaree Meeks and brothers Aubrey Vickers and Grady Vickers.
Mrs. Grantham retired from the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Augusta, Ga., in October 1990, where she had worked as a medical secretary. She previously worked as an admissions clerk at St. Joseph's Hospital and as an Army finance clerk at Fort Gordon. She was well liked by her co-workers and received many letters of commendation from her employers and supervisors.
She was born January 8, 1929 and raised on a farm near Willacoochee, Ga. She graduated from Willacoochee High School and attended Mt. Berry College in Rome, Ga for two years where she met many lifelong friends and acquired some of her fondest memories. She especially enjoyed the beauty of the campuses at Mt. Berry during the changing of the seasons.
During the years she lived in the Augusta area she regularly attended church, having memberships at Silver Crest Baptist Church, Gracewood Baptist Church and then Morningside Baptist Church. When she could no longer attend church she enjoyed watching and listening to televised sermons by her favorite ministers.
Mrs. Grantham loved animals especially her cats. After her children were grown she devoted much of her time to providing food and shelter for the homeless cats in her neighborhood. She also enjoyed writing fiction and non-fiction and corresponding with her numerous pen pals. Some of her writings were published in Christian magazines and newsletters. She kept a diary most of her life and enjoyed scrapbooking and collecting pictures of various flowers and animals species.
She was a loving and devoted mother, daughter and sister. Her most rewarding accomplishments included assisting her daughter and mother through their illnesses and death.
The family will receive friends between 6:00 to 9:00 PM on Friday, April 4, 2014 at the Sims Funeral Homes in Douglas, Ga. She will be buried next to her daughter in the Purvis Cemetery, between Douglas and Ocilla, Ga. Pallbearers will be John Buckley, Nicholas Utley, Jeffrey Mancil, Brett Meeks, and Jamie Vickers. A local minister will officiate. Daveen Smith will provide the music.
